Burl refers to a rounded outgrowth of a tree with round knots on it appearing because of dormant buds and abnormal growth. Burl are typically a result of some kind of stress that a tree is put under, either naturally or artificially. Example are fungus or mold infection, inhibiting growth can result in burl formation. Burl wood is used by furniture makers and sculptors.
