Syrup of ipecac is a emetic, a substance consumed to induce vomiting, used in cases of accidental poisoning. However some recent studies suggest it to be not as effective as it was thought to be. It is know for its abuse as a way to lose weight. This can cause damage to heart, teeth and even cause user's death.
