Why was the name Antarctica given ? For that we have to understand "Arctic". Arctic is Greek for "bear", referring to the constellation Ursa Major - which is in North. "Ant" means opposite (from Anti). Hence opposite of Arctic must be Ant-arctic that is, Antarctica. In other words opposite of the "bear" in Greek - Antarctica.
